Aug 21st The New BackType

Today we rolled out a new look for BackType – one that focuses on real-time, conversational search. Although this update mainly relates to the design of the site, we have made some significant changes to search that we’ll continue to improve moving forward.

Until now, BackType has been widely considered a (blog) comment search engine. As you’ll discover, we’re much more than that. We find, archive and connect online conversations from over a million blogs, social networks and other social media in near real-time. That gives us a unique and comprehensive perspective on what topics, web pages and media people are talking about on the web, right now.

BackType is a real-time, conversational search engine. We index and connect online conversations from across the web in real-time, so you can see what people are saying about topics that interest you.

The new BackType will keep you up-to-date on the topics you’re interested in, surfacing reputable opinions and timely commentary happening around the web. We want to deliver the best search results by measuring the amount and quality of conversation surrounding articles, posts and other web pages.

The New Look

BackType Redesign

The redesign is focused on search; our search engine results pages show results from BackType as well as a stream of updates from Twitter.

What’s next?

We have a lot of work to do to improve the quality of our search results. This redesign is the first of many improvements that refocus BackType on the search and discovery of new ideas, opinions and information in real-time. Here’s a sample of what’s to come:

  • Continuous improvements to search
  • Real-time updates to search results
  • Trending topics
  • Advanced search

We want your feedback!

Please let us know what you think about the redesign. Your feedback’s important to us and will help us decide what changes we make to the service.

Will have a play now…must admit, i’ll miss the black

Thanks, Zee! I miss the black too. We’ll figure out a way to bring it back somehow ;)

You know, backtype is a pretty awesome idea since conversational search is clearly valuable to brands and businesses.I guess this jumping on the "real-time" bandwagon will get them exposure and funding but I hope they don’t lose their focus on making the most kickass way to track conversation about your brand or business as a result of some fad.

They need to solve harder problems like, removing noise from the system and improving accuracy!

Relevance needs to be influenced by a language classifier. I don’t need Italian and Russian results.

Aditya, thanks for the feedback — if anything this latest release reflects that we are much more focused on solving search problems as they relate to both consumers and businesses. Previously BackType was viewed as a toolset for comment authors, bloggers, and businesses — features like subscriptions, claiming your own comments, etc still exist but they are more buried for those power users. We’re working hard on improving our search :)

That’s cool… But why aren’t you supporting searches in languages other than English?

We’re working on that and more. Stay tuned :)
