Jul 15th Tweetcount Now Supports Bit.ly, Su.pr, Digg, TinyURL & More

Last week, we released a WordPress plugin and widget called Tweetcount:

Tweetcount allows you to display the number of tweets your posts receive, and lets readers retweet the page they’re on.

In addition to supporting awe.sm, Tweetcount now lets you choose from a variety of URL shorteners: Bit.ly, Su.pr, Digg, TinyURL and more! If you set bttc_short_url using javascript or WordPress’ custom fields for the widget and plugin, respectively, you can actually use any pre-shortened URL you like. As mentioned in our initial release, bt.io and awe.sm-powered shorteners will send click data to Google Analytics.

This release adds to a growing list of advantages over other buttons:

  • More accurate tweet counts
  • Support for more URL shorteners
  • More customization options for the button’s appearance

When readers click the tweetcount, we also show them other places the post/article is being discussed (via BackType Connect)

Will you be integrating GA tracking with bit.ly?

1. The code I copied from the widget page, doesn’t let me use bit.ly or su.pr. When I tweet the article it just give a short url as http://bit.ly/‘ or ‘http://su.pr/’ without anything else at the end of this URL.
So currently I am using default bt.io.
I have tried using the API keys for both services but nothing works.
Is there any problem while accessing the APIs, or it is just me having issue?
Can someone please help?

2. Some of the articles on my blog have got several tweets but the widget doesn’t show any count. Why is that?

Please help.

I am using Tweetcount replacing Tweetmeme on both of my blogs: http://www.knowliz.com and http://www.guturgu.com.

Thanks

The widget only supports awe.sm-powered URLs (we default to our own bt.io), unless you pre-shorten a URL and include it using the tweetcount_short_url variable. The WordPress plugin supports all the other shorteners.

Apologies if that was unclear!

Regarding the count, please point us to the inaccurate count and we’ll look into it for you

This is the URL as of now which shows the wrong Tweet count. Please check.

Also I am dying to use bit.ly or su.pr in the widget on blogger. bt.io doesn’t provide me any analytics.
Will love to see that change soon.
Thanks

Has anyone found a way to apply css to the “retweet” portion of the button to allow for hover effects? As much as I prefer this button compared to TweetMeme, TweetMeme’s hover effect helps people not familiar with the button realize that it is, in fact a button.

This appears to be the relevant class for TweetCount: ‘div.backtype-tweetcount a:hover’. However, it seems that the CSS is being fed by tweecount’s servers, not locally by my own: ‘http://assets.backtype.com/css/widgets/tweetcount.v0.1.css’ Does anyone know a way to override that sheet locally?

I’ve just tried to use the wordpress tweetcount plugin on my WordPress MU blog and its doesn’t seems to work – when you try and save your settings you get a “Error! Options page not found” message. I did find this post in the wordpress forums that seems to think that the plugin needs to be updated to allow for new security updates in wordpress MU that will be coming to standard WP soon.

Any plans to update the plugin to allow for this? I really like the look of this widget and would love to use it.

Thanks

Rob

Hi Rob,

We’ve had a few users modify the plugin to make it work for MU. Will follow up shortly w/ a link or details of the changes.

Actually, can you shoot me an email at mm [at] backtype? I can send you the set of changes (we haven’t incorporated them back into our version of the plugin).
